Preparing for Research Abroad: Wellbeing, Ethics and Safety in the Field

Planning a research stay or fieldwork abroad?

Most research methods courses prepare you to collect data. This seminar prepares you to take care of yourself, navigate ethical complexity, and handle the realities of conducting research in the field.

This interactive one-day seminar is designed for master's students, PhD candidates and early-career researchers at Norwegian academic institutions preparing for research stays, fieldwork, or extended academic visits abroad.

Through discussions, practical exercises and real-life cases, participants will explore challenges related to wellbeing, ethics, power relations, personal safety and emergency preparedness.

The seminar will be delivered both online and in person. The physical venue will be located in Oslo, Bergen or Trondheim, depending on participant demand

Facilitators The seminar will be facilitated by Erika Rojas, Ole Johannes Kaland, and a clinical psychologist. Together, they bring extensive experience in international development, social research, fieldwork, ethics, wellbeing, and mental health. The seminar combines academic insight with practical tools for navigating the opportunities and challenges of research abroad.
