The Norec Network in Malawi has a clear ambition to make a difference — in several ways.

“This country-based network is something we truly need. Combining our knowledge from Norec exchanges creates numerous opportunities. We want to create a strong network in Malawi that can make things happen," says committee leader Francis Mtambalika.

Together with Esmy Chimanda, Mkondo Temwani Harawa, Neo Chitsulo Beaulah, Tionge Angella Banda, Brave Vinjeru, and Mazgo Khonje, he forms the steering group for Norec Network Malawi.

The launch ran smoothly

The Malawi network was established in mid-February, making it the second country-based network launched by Norec. The Norec Network Uganda was the first, introduced the week before.

“The launch of these two country-based networks ran smoothly. The goal has been to set up networks with functional committees, so they can take responsibility for future activities and events themselves. The level of engagement is high, and we strongly believe these country-based networks will bear fruits,” says Norec Network leader Tonje Polden Steinsland.

The global Norec Network was launched in Nairobi, Kenya, in June 2023. As of today, it has around 2,300 members. By creating country-based networks in the countries with the most members, it becomes easier to organise impactful activities.

Wants to raise awareness of the network

Francis Mtambalika is honoured to be elected committee leader for Norec Network Malawi.

“This kind of network has great opportunities. We can come together and share knowledge but also figure out how the expertise we possess can benefit others,” says Mtambalika.

He highlights that one of their first priorities is to raise awareness of the network so that as many former Norec exchange participants as possible join the country-based network.

“We should be able to gather quite a few members. The network works both ways — how can network members contribute to the network, and what can the network offer them? The sky is the limit,” says Mtambalika.

The network is like an extended family

Tionge Angella Banda (27) is pleased to have been elected to the committee and praises the initiative of the country-based network.

“Even though we all live here in Malawi, many of us didn’t know each other. By becoming part of the network, you gain an extended family. We’ve only spent two days together during this gathering, still we’ve managed to inspire and motivate each other in so many ways,” says Banda.

She believes the country-based network can have ripple effects that will be felt across Malawi.

“I believe the Norec Network Malawi can have a positive impact in many areas. By developing different activities, we should be able to influence a wide range of communities,” says Banda.
