NAVIGATING SAFETY, POWER, AND ETHICAL GREY AREAS DURING FIELDWORK

Bergen

We are excited to invite master’s students and early career researchers at academic institutions in Norway to participate in an interactive seminar designed by Norec in dialogue with CMI in Bergen.

Young researchers often find themselves unprepared for the strains and challenges that await them while on fieldwork and research stays. This includes their general well-being in a new context, awareness of the precarious situations they may find themselves in, and their mental and physical safety.

The goal of this seminar is to mitigate this by raising awareness about emergency preparedness and personal safety, and to prepare for ethical and power-related gray areas when doing research.

The seminar will be facilitated by course advisers Erika Rojas and Ole Johannes Kaland from Norec, who both have solid backgrounds as social science researchers with field experience from Norway, Colombia, El Salvador, China and Taiwan.

The seminar will be held in English.

Moreover, this will be an in-person seminar to encourage active participation and create room for sharing experiences, concerns and finding solutions related to research travel together.

To make the most of this seminar, please complete the following preparations, and write down your concerns before we meet at Abdel Ghaffar Meeting Room Chr. Michelsen’s Institute (CMI).

Well met!
